THERMAGE, DISTRIBUTED IN AUSTRALIA BY INOVA PHARMACEUTICALS, HAS PIONEERED THE USE OF RADIOFREQUENCY ENERGY IN WRINKLE REDUCTION AND SKIN TIGHTENING.
Thermage was the first device to pioneer the use of radiofrequency energy in the treatment of wrinkles. It hit the market more than 10 years ago and, since then, has been used by practitioners in over 2,500 practices and across 80 different countries. Since its introduction to the aesthetic market, more than one million Thermage treatmentshave been performed worldwide.
“The science behind Thermage, or monopolar radiofrequency energy, is very well-documented in clinical studies published in highly respected medical publications,” says Perth cosmetic physician Dr Maysa Abu Laban, who has been using Thermage in-clinic for the past five years.
“The bulk heating of subcutaneous tissue generated by Thermage results in remodelling of collagen fibres with both shortening of the existing collagen fibres and production of new ones. Over time, this leads to the tightening of skin at the treatment area.”
Thermage is indicated for use in cosmetic and dermatological settings to address skin laxity on the face and body, including the eye area. The non-invasive system is designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face and upper and lower eyelid hooding, as well as improve sagging skin on the body.
The system is easily adopted both in-practice (it can be used as an adjunct to several cosmetic treatments) and by patients themselves (Thermage is noninvasive and a single treatment is all that is typically required to achieve results).
“Attractions to Thermage treatment are many, and certainly include the fact that the treatment is non-invasive with very few possible complications (we’ve had close to none at our clinic), and that it induces gradual improvement in the skin and with very natural-looking results,” says Dr Abu Laban.
“We purchased the new Thermage system about five years ago and have conducted more than 400 treatments since then,” she continues. “Treatments were performed on different body parts, including face, neck and upper chest, forearms and arms, abdomen, and thighs. We had inconsistent results the first year, but results have been better and far more consistent lately after we made some modifications to the treatment.”
One of these modifications involves pain control. While Thermage is non-invasive, topical anaesthetic is often required during treatment. The newest evolution of the Thermage system includes patented Comfort Pulse Technology, which uses gentle vibrations and interspersed cooling to assist in patient comfort.
“A key factor in achieving consistent results with Thermage is adequate pain control, which allows the skin to be treated to the required temperature,” Dr Abu Laban explains. “I perform the treatments myself in-clinic. Assistance of a second practitioner is very valuable, particularly with gel application, as it speeds up the treatment process – which is an important factor in rapid heating of the treated area.”
Treatment with Thermage targets collagen and collagen-based structures, as opposed to pigment. This means treatment is applicable to all Fitzpatrick skin types without the risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
ROI with Thermage
A doctor, nurse or aesthetician can perform Thermage treatment. It can be used as a standalone skin tightening procedure, or in conjunction with other modalities, including light therapies, toxins and dermal fillers.
Most importantly, it’s effective. Results following Thermage treatment continue to improve for up to six months post-procedure.
“Thermage has been a very good investment at our clinic. It has certainly attracted new patients to the clinic and provided another treatment option for our existing patients,” says Dr Abu Laban. “Skin usually looks better at the end of the treatment, which is partially attributed to an inflammatory reaction. Noticeable clinical improvement is usually observed at three months post treatment.”
