The eye area is one of the first regions on the face to show signs of aging. Heavy upper eyelids, decent of eyebrows, wrinkled skin under eyes, crow’s feet appearance, dark circles and bags under the eyes are all very common concerns that may negatively impact on facial appearance.
Heavy upper eyelids can become particularly disturbing when in addition to the aesthetic appearance, also impact on vision.
Surgical blepharoplasty also known as eyelid tightening or eyelift lift, is a surgical procedure that can be done to remove excess skin from upper and lower eyelids. It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide.
In recent years, there has been huge advances in medical technology especially in the field of cosmetic medicine. As a result, many alternatives have been introduced, not to replace surgery, but to widen patients’ choices and to provide alternate options when surgery isn’t one.
Plasma eyelid tightening is certainly emerging as a very good option for individuals troubled with heavy upper eyelids who are not interested or contraindicated for surgical blepharoplasty.
The device works by ionizing gas particles in the air present between the tip of the device/pen and the skin being treated. Plasma is generated through the tip of the device. The energy created is then transferred as heat to the superficial skin layer closest to device. This results in sublimation of skin closest to the tip, immediate collagen contraction and subsequent skin remodeling leading to further tightening.
Numbing cream is applied to treatment area for about an hour. Plasma treatment is then performed which takes about 30 minutes for upper eyelids, same for lower eyelids. Heat may be felt during the treatment but is tolerable.
Swelling and minor scabs are apparent immediately after treatment. Swelling usually subsides 3-4 days following the treatment, scabs usually come off fully at one week.
Down time is usually 2-3 days for upper eyelids, and up to a week for lower.
Results are usually seen at 2-3 weeks post treatment and continue to improve for up to 4 months after. Treatment can be repeated if required to further improve on outcome.
Results are expected to last for years.
Patient’s Comments: “I had no side vision prior to this procedure, and this was the first time in years that I was able to do eyelash extensions, as I also couldn’t do it before this treatment.”
