What are they?
Dermal fillers were first introduced in early 1970’s. They are injectable products/implants used for soft tissue augmentation. They have become a very popular means of addressing several signs of aging including restoring volume loss, wrinkles, skin folds and some scars.
What does the treatment involve?
The procedure is simple, quick and well tolerated. Possible side effects include redness, bruising, swelling and tenderness. Hypersensitivity reactions are very rare. The treatment takes about 30 minutes and the results are evident immediately after treatment.
There are numerous types of dermal fillers available that differ in their indication, effectiveness, safety and longevity of results.
Dermal Fillers are used to treat:
- Upper and lower lip lines
- Lip augmentation
- Frown lines
- Deep smile lines
- Facial scars and skin depressions
- Tear Troughs
- Smooth out facial wrinkles and folds
- Cheek augmentation
- Fill hollowed temples
- Jaw line/Chin augmentation
What does result depend on?
To achieve the desirable outcome and longevity expected of filler treatment depends largely on the correct choice of filler type, the right filler viscosity and the correct placement of the filler chosen. The wrong choice or placement of filler may result in unsatisfactory treatment outcome and undesirable side effects some of which may be serious.

Sculptra was introduced in Australia in March 2002 after proving very successful in Europe for four years. Poly-L-lactive acid (PLA), the main component of Sculptra, has been used in plastic and reconstructive surgery for more than 20 years. It is indicated for correction of skin depressions such as creases, wrinkles, folds, scars and eye rings.
It is particularly valuable for correction of large volume loss associated with ageing or medical conditions (Lipoatrophy).
Results are not seen immediately. Improvement is usually seen in 2 weeks and may take up to 3 months for full results to manifest. Top ups at monthly intervals may be needed to achieve the optimum results.
Results are shown to last over two years.
